Brief History
In November 1884, the Fourth Congress of the American Federation of Labor proposed that from 1 May 1886 were forced to employers to comply with the 8-hour day and if that was not the case the workers went on strike. In 1886, U.S. President Andrew Johnson issued a call Ingersoll Act that established the 8-hour workday. This Act was not met, so that on 1 May 1886, a group of American workers moved towards achieving a variety of occupational demands, including the request for the reduction of the workday to 8 hours. The protest, which initially had the support of 80000 workers, quickly became a nationwide strike which is still remembered because of its magnitude and its tragic outcome, because one of the demonstrations a bomb took the life of a group of police officers and several anarchist workers were sentenced to death for this, they never found them to be authors.
In our country, Labor Day was first commemorated in 1890 and was attended various labor movements, although it was not until 1899, during the development of the first congress of the Second Socialist International decided to commemorate this date, the Labour Solidarity.
