The Berlin Wall, called "Anti-Fascist Protection Wall in communist East Germany (GDR's self-proclaimed) and sometimes nicknamed the" Wall shame "by the Western public opinion was part of the German border since 13 August 1961 until 9 November 1989 and spread to West Germany (West Germany then) East Germany until that year.
The wall stretched for 45 miles of Berlin split in two and 115 miles that separated the western part of the city of the territory of the GDR. He was one of the best known symbols of the Cold War and the division of Germany.
Many people died in the attempt to overcome the harsh supervision of border guards.
The wall had a length of 120 km. The initial construction was improved regularly. The wall of the fourth generation, which began construction in 1975, concrete was armed, had a height of 3.6 m and consisted of 45,000 separate sections of 1.5 m in length. Its cost was 16,155,000 East German marks. In addition, the border was protected by a chain link fence, alarm cables, trenches to prevent the passage of vehicles, a barbed wire fence, over 300 watchtowers, and thirty bunkers.
The Berlin Wall fell on the evening of Thursday, November 9, 1989, to Friday, November 10, 1989, 28 years after its construction. The opening of the wall, known in Germany under the name of die Wende (the change) was a result of the demands for freedom of movement in the former GDR and evasions constant capital to the embassies of countries of the Warsaw Pact and the border between Hungary and Austria, which imposed fewer restrictions from 23 August. In September, more than 13,000 East Germans emigrated to Hungary.
